Exercises for every age. 6 to 86.

Somatics is a form of exercise that can be done by any age. Whether it’s your young child or your old parent/grandparent, anyone can learn to move intentionally. Somatics is not just to recover from injuries, but also to learn your mind and body’s connection. So you can live better and have a clearer mind.

Take a look at my youngest student with her grandfather, doing Somatics movements. Learning at a young age, gives you a greater chance of succeeding in future because adults are more averse to learning as opposed to kids. Kids are like sponge, they absorb everything around them. So if you have a kid, make sure to enrol them for Somatics to help guide them through understanding the capabilities of the body. And for everyone else, it’s never too late to treat your body better. Start today.

Contact me at somaticsyoga@gmail.com for consultation and sessions. People in Mumbai, India may avail in-person offline sessions as well.

Lavender and its benefits

Welcome to Lavender Week!

If you're looking to calm both the body and the mind, look no further than Lavender. There are many varied species of lavender, all differing in their aromas, characters, and blossoming. 4 types especially stand out: The Lavender Vera, The Lavender Spike, The Lavender Stoechade, and the Lavandin Super.

Lavender oil is a multi-purpose essential oil derived from the lavender plant. It is produced by distilling the harvested flowers, and the essential oil depends on the lavender species and composition. It is how it can be customised according to individual needs and then applied to the skin, and breathed in through aromatherapy.

Some Benefits –

·       It helps you sleep deeply, and helps with insomnia

·       It helps relieve stress and fights anxiety

·       It helps soothe your skin

·       It can ease headaches.

·       It gives you naturally glowing skin

·       Last, but not the least, it smells wonderful.

Quick Relief from Back Pain with Somatics

Have you been feeling back-pain regularly? Like your spine just doesn't feel ok anymore? Or your back just hurts all the time. Are you looking for relief?

Then Somatics might be the right fit for you. Somatics uses the mind-body connection to help you listen to the signals your body sends about pain or discomfort. Even imbalances. This, in turn, allows you to know how your body holds on to these pain points.

But how are you getting back pain in the first place?

Most of us don't take the time to relax our muscles after any strenuous activity, so the muscles in our body learn to stay contracted. So to un-contract them, most forms of recovery try to strengthen, stretch, or adjust people out of back pain But the problem isn't in your muscles; it's in your brain, the part of your body that learns and unlearns everything. Even how you hold your body.

One very basic Somatics movement that can help aid this is the Back Lift. In the back lift, you move by slowly contracting your back, and then slowly lengthening into relaxation. This method is called pandiculation. It is a natural movement for all vertebrate animals like cats and dogs when they get up from rest. Doing the back lift brings your brain back into sensory and motor control of the muscles.

Back pain can be healed through gentle Somatics. Here's a testimony from my client who I've worked with regularly:

I am sharing my experience with Somatic Yoga, as taught by a certified practitioner Hina Sampat.

Life was flowing normally until one fine day, my wife was suddenly in terrible and acute pain. Not knowing what had happened, we visited a couple of doctors. After consulting them, we came to know that her hip muscle had torn, and this was the cause of her immense pain. When your hip muscles tear, you can barely move around. My wife was  bedridden. Along with that, she was constantly feeling a sharp pain in her legs. Things looked bad.

We knew we had to fix this and relieve my wifes pain. That is when my daughter-in-law suggested we consult Mrs. Hina Sampat. I already knew Mrs. Hina as she frequented our house to take Somatics sessions for my daughter-in-law, who was also showing great signs of recovery from her personal pain-points, but that is a story for another timeMrs. Hina met my wife and could empathise with her condition. But more importantly, she knew exactly what would help her. She charted out a path of recovery which began with Daily Sessions. In two weeks her daily sessions , gradually but definitely, started making a difference. My wife can now get up without any support and move on her own. The progress has been incredible to witness. When Mrs. Hina started taking the sessions, my wife started using a stick to walk around. Two weeks in, she can walk around the house with zero support. Her back pain has considerably reduced as well.  My wife will continue taking her sessions and surely seeing further improvements.
Hina Sampat's dedication and commitments to cure my wife are praiseworthy. I wish her every success in promoting Somatic Yoga for all those who need it as a cure as well as for healthier beings to avoid any future health problems. Prevention is better than cure!

Teenagers, and posture. #2

One of the most prevalent complaints of adults throughout the world is back pain. Most people experience back pain at some point in their lives, and this comes down to poor posture. But a newer generation is now facing this problem…teenagers.

What is this problem caused by?
More and more teenagers now spend their day sitting down. Either in front of a television, a computer, a gaming console, or even a study-desk. Growing teens being glued to their phones is also a fairly common sight now.

This causes something called the “text neck”. The text neck is a posture where we see a forward head posture due to neck misalignment, where the shoulders are rolled forward and slouched caused by being hunched over screen.

That begs the question. What is good posture?
Posture can be defined as the way in which you hold yourself. Good posture ensures that all of your bones and joints are aligned properly and prevents excessive strain on the muscles. Good posture involves having a neutral spine.

What does bad posture do?
Bad posture leads to an ever growing prevalence of a pain-points in their lives. Things like back pain, headaches, and lack of energy to do things. This can be very harmful to young teens, carrying over to their adult lives.

What are the benefits of good posture?
When you stand and sit with your body properly aligned, all your organs can function as intended. Your bones and spine can easily support your body’s weight. Making you breathe better, look better, and function better.

Can poor posture be improved?
Definitely. With just a little help, you can understand what is going wrong, then with some discipline and perseverance you can get it right. You will feel the positive changes almost immediately as well. Yoga is a great way to do this. With Yoga, we learn to understand our body, tweak our posture and get in tune with how our own body moves and responds.

Somatics Yoga makes you intentional about your movements, and helps you understand how you hold yourself. It is all about making yourself better.
So if your teenager is facing difficulties standing or sitting straight, simply contact us. We can help you lead a healthier life.

Remember today’s mantra:
Stand straight, show confidence, stay powerful.

Somatics Chair Exercises

Somatics is a versatile form of exercise. It not just helps the fit get fitter, but it also helps recovering patients ease back into normality.

Today, we shall talk about Somatics Chair Exercises. It is a variation of Somatics that helps people in their recovery process by moulding the exercises to their range of motion.

One of my clients cannot get down to the floor, or back up on her feet comfortably. Neither can she lie on the floor comfortably, flat or supine. Normal Somatics exercises for her can be a little troublesome in this case. This is when Somatics Chair exercises come into play. These help her heal while also fitting in her range of motion. Take a look at this guided session and see the difference:

HINA’S TIP OF THE DAY:

This new year, pick your spot, sit on a chair and take a deep breath. Live intentionally, and make some time for peace.

Anxiety Relief

Here’s something most of us don’t know. Somatics Yoga, as good as it is for the body physically, is also tremendous for our mental health. The mindful, intentional exercises help alleviate anxiety at the time everything feels out of control. Don’t take my word for it, hear it straight from one of my clients benefitting from my Somatics Yoga sessions.

He is a software engineer who was suffering from acute anxiety due to his professional life. This would manifest into physical ailments too. When he came to me 3 months ago, we charted out his progress to help him gain control of his mind and body. Today, he walks with a sense of calmness and assurity. He is miles better when it comes to being in touch with himself and has gained a commendable sense of control over his mind. He is proof that we can achieve all we want by knowing ourselves better. His kind words -

“The practice has helped me gain control of my mind and my body. Slowly I was able to control my breath and use it to calm myself. Regular exercise and stretching has loosened up the tension regions in my back, neck and shoulder region. I now have a better understanding of myself and my body. I highly recommend the practice of somatics yoga, it has really brought me peace of mind.”

Hina's Tip for the Day:
Remember to take a break once a while
to enjoy the cool breeze.
